I was reading this interview with Morgan Freeman and I really liked that he used the term, "poverty of the spirit." Racism today in the U.S. is not so much about color (which yes, is still alive and I can no way say it's not there), but is more about class. For example when you look at a disaster like Hurricane Katrina, just as many poor whites were neglected help as blacks, etc. Freeman made this really cool point about there being two kinds of poverty. One being, poverty of class - not having a lot of money and another one of having the mind state that you'll never be able to rise above that - poverty of the spirit. You convince yourself, or others convinced you that it will never be different and that's the way it is, so deal with it. And that is the main factor for a lot of Americans, their attitude towards being poor.
The liquor store on every corner of low income neighborhoods.
Drugs.
99 cent stores will all kinds of stupid shit to buy that you don't need.
Materialism.
The list could on why people have poverty of the spirit and the things rich people do to keep them there.
