On the Night My Love Broke Through

I don't usually take "personal" days from work, but maybe I should look into doing it more often, because yesterday was awesome!
Pancakes!
Beach!
Watched Ratatouille!
Rock Band!
Beer!
COLD WAR KIDS IN STORE AT FINGERPRINTS!
More beer!
Indulge!
The new Cold War album is great off a first listen, I'll be posting my favorite songs once I've broken the repeat button.
I hope she remembers what I said.....

The 9/11 Conspiracies: Fact or Fiction

It's been close to 7 years since "9-11" and the battle and argument over what really happened that day is still as strong as ever and may not ever really be answered in a world that can be bought, edited, bribed, convinced, or any combination of these things.
I honestly thought this documentary on the History channel was going to be more objective. I can be naive sometimes.
It took the derogatory route of saying anyone who questioned what happen on 9-11 is paranoid, disrespectful to the victims, and in most cases reads too deeply into the situation.
The "experts" were for the most part the staff at Popular Mechanics, which has been owned by the media conglomerate, Hearst Corporation since the 1950s, a publishing company drench in all kinds of "interesting" history. Just watch Citizen Kane or take a look at William Randolph Hearst wiki page. That's besides the point though, just a fun fact. The point is Popular Mechanics, just like conspiracy theorists have their own agenda and it's not to "debunk" the truth. The agenda is to not piss off their owners and their advertisers who are for the most part, oh wouldn't you know, military and defense contractors and maybe throw in some tobacco companies and Wal-Mart for good measure.
The best part about this documentary is when you dig deeper is this. A&E Television Networks owns the History Channel. Who is A&E Television jointly owned by? ABC, Inc., THE HEARST CORPORATION and NBC Universal.
Cash is KING ya'll, don't let it hold you back from asking questions no matter how much they criticize you.

Sweetwater Saloon

This is just a shout out to my local dive bar The Sweetwater Saloon. 5 reasons the Saloon is cooler than your dive bar.
1) The ICIEST beer mugs you'll ever hold. I swear they are stored in Antarctica and somehow magically show up in my hand. Cheap Bud Light only tastes good here.
2) Two pool tables, darts, jukebox, bar game thing all in this little fucking place that holds like 80 people if even.
3) Cowboy doors! and a little door on the front door that makes it feel like a speak easy
4) No one is ever really there, and if crowded bars give you anxiety like me, this is a life saver
5) Tinted front windows that make them like mirrors so you can always check your look or be creepy and eye people outside smoking

RNC Convention
Not that I think Republicans deserve any coverage, but how boring has the RNC Convention been?
Have any of them taken a public speaking class or at least put any passion behind what they're saying? They sound like drones.
It would be really great as well if they would be honest about the audience they are speaking to. They're always saying "the people" "the people" - "this is for the people!" They need to be honest and say "the rich people, not everyone." I guess that won't go over well with the poor uneducated citizens who they usually sucker into voting for them.
The whole motto of "drill baby drill" also freaks me out. Calling for more drilling in the US is not energy independence. It's a short term solution to present problems and a retarded one at that. If they actually believed in science and took the time to realize the solution is to free ourselves from oil completely they actually might make money with something that doesn't destroy our environment.
Where are they expecting their un-aborted children to live anyway?

Everything Bad is Good for You

This is a good book to check out if you're into Science and Technology and you're always wondering why people say TV will rot your brain or video games spawn real life violence blah blah when really we are flexing our cognitive muscles more than ever and with a little effort really expanding our critical thinking with mutli-level games, multi-thread plot lines on tv and the internet leaving knowledge right at our finger tips.
excellent read. I recommend for fearful mom's everywhere.

Randoms!
Work can be very amusing most of the time since I'm in a creative environment. A few of my favorite quotes from meetings today:
"His helicopter broke, he won't back from shooting until tomorrow."
"They just want the face to melt, they don't want any parts falling off"
A few other things:
I have a dope t-shirt on today

Myspace profile trackers: creepy for all parties involved. Viewer is made to feel like a stalker rather than a curious. User insecure? self absorbed? combination?

We Used To Be Friends
Dandy Warhols - We Used To Be Friends
This is one of those songs that I always get excited about when comes on the shuffle and I turn it up wayyy loud and anytime I make a fun playlist it's on there. I don't know if it's all the "ah's" or just how fucking cool Courtney's voice is (yes, his name is Courtney) , or maybe it's because they're from Portland, but the Dandy Warhols are one of my favorite bands of all time.
This is a hilarious puppet video set to the song:
I believe this is the actual video:
You pick your favorite. I'm going with the puppets.
Here are the lyrics to sing along!
A long time ago, we used to be friends
But I haven't thought of you lately at all
If ever again a greeting I send to you,
Short and sweet to the soul I intend.
A, ah-ahh-ahh-ahh
A, ah-ahh-ahh-ahh
A, ah-ahh-ahh-ahh
A, ah-ahh-ahh-ahh
Come on now, honey,
Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.
Just remember me when you're good to go
Come on now, sugar,
Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.
Just remember me when.
It's something I said, or someone I know.
Or you called me up, maybe I wasn't home.
Now everybody needs some time,
And everybody knows
The rest of it's fine
And everybody knows that.
Come on now, sugar,
Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.
Just remember me when you're good to go
Come on now, honey,
Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.
Just remember me when.

You know how I hate tasers
Saw this on the front page of Google today and it's another incident of abuse of tasing.
I hate tasers. I think it's the stupidest weapon the police have ever been given, because since it doesn't have the stigma of a gun, cops feel it's ok to abuse the shit out of it.
Here's the whole article
Tasing
The most fucked up quote is this:
"The only thing he could have done other than to say, 'OK, we're going to let you go' is to beat him or Tase him. He did the right thing," Terrell said.
WTF? Is a petty drug dealer really worth killing?
The police officer has only now been fired because out of the 14 incidents of tasing from this particular station in Louisiana 10, yes 10! Have been by this one officer.
fuck this.

Fremde Haut

Good flick we just checked out (was made in 05 though).
The English name is Unveiled, but the original name Fremde Haut is way cooler sounding, let's face it.
Main character Fariba Tabrizi seeks asylum in Germany to avoided being persecuted in Iran for a lesbian relationship. After numerous failed attempts Fariba takes on the identity of a dead man to get in and that's how the story unfolds.
I just fell in love with Germany, so I might be a little biased on saying this film is good, but I think it holds it's own in the drama category. Jasmin Tabatabai (who plays Fariba) does an outstanding job and it's shot with such detail, any filmmaker could appreciate it for that if the story can lag in parts.

The Dark Knight

Was nothing short of fantastic! And yes Heath Ledger (rip) stole the show. I haven't seen anyone jump into character like that since Johnny Depp took Jack Sparrow and just ran with it. Christian Bale was excellent as always, but what's with the over the top voice disguise? We all know Batman has to throw his voice a bit, but it sounded like he couldn't breathe through the plastic over his nose on the mask. I don't want to throw out spoilers, I want everyone to see this film some way some how.
Made 158 million dollars over the weekend as well. Not to shabby. HA!

Tila (insert me shaking my head here)
....feels she is the reason gay marriage rights passed in California.

Here's the quote:
"[The legalization of gay marriage] is because of me — I definitely think [my show] has helped the movement. Before it came out, everyone was still a little apprehensive about [same sex relationships]. Then they realized, ‘Wow, everyone is really into this stuff, and it is fine.’ The next thing you know, [gay marriage] is legal."
I guess if Tila was more attractive than she thinks she is or if the show wasn't so fake feeling this quote might roll over a little better with LGBT community.
I'm surprised the gay people of California (and anywhere else) aren't lining up to slap her.
Maybe she meant to say "I definitely think having a slutty show on tv where I pretend to find love for high tv ratings amongst horny 18-35 year olds has helped the movement."
Did anyone let Tila know Ellen was gay and on TV before she was?

Go Celtics!
Ghost Bikes

Pretty long to explain so here's the link to how these work: Ghost Bike
In a nut shell though, these are put at intersections, etc where individuals on bikes have been hit or killed by a motorist. The point is we share the road and everyone should do there part to follow the laws both bike and car for a happy and stress free commute.
Awesome cause, awesome idea - though it's not something I really want to see in person due to the nature of the subject.

Yes We Can

So Hillary didn't clenched the nomination and this may be sad for a lot of older women out there, but let's face it she's not the right woman for the presidency right now. Put up a good fight for sure and should really swallow her pride and consider the idea of a VP role to really secure the election against McCain. There was no sexism in this election. It came down to being genuine. A trait Hillary leaves less than to be desired.
I am a woman and I have been behind Barack since I saw him speak on television at the 2004 DNC convention. The man has presence, drive, and a genuine desire to change the nation. That's the type of hope we want these days.
Barack Obama for president. The end.

Found this on Boing Boing.
Awesome money management website. Very clean interface and you don't have to input any personal information other than an email to set up an account.
Much easier to use than Quicken or even keeping your own spreadsheet.
Let's you give guesstimations on totals and really just helps you track your money and what you spend it on.
$3 a month after the one month trial period. I'm going to try it out and report back around the end of July with an update.

Southland Tales

The one single thing that made this film fail was this: The Rock. Yep. The cast of this film is so diverse and funny with cameos up the yin yang and then you have the damn Rock as the main character. I was picturing someone a little more like Benico Del Toro a la The Usual Suspects.
The one person you can't deny that can act (even though you don't want to admit it) is Justin Timberlake. The dream sequence in the arcade had me practically rolling on the floor laughing so hard. I'd also have to say Sara Michelle's character Krysta Now had me cracking up at how eccentric and over the top she was.
To understand and appreciate this movie I think is to get where Richard Kelley is coming from. This isn't Donnie Darko, no other film will ever be Donnie Darko, so let's just get that out of the way right off the bat. He wrote this story well before the idea of "homeland security" and modified it after 9-11 and like Darko it uses a lot of the same themes and ideas that have given Kelley his style. Highly polished, music driven, darkly funny, low budget awesomeness. In the making since 2004 and not even released in theatres until end of 2007 I can understand why the bigwigs of Hollywood didn't understand this movie. It's making fun of them, it's taking a stab at the US government, and it's filled with over the top interactive media that blends into a moving comic book literally.
No one over 35 will understand that I'm sure. Maybe I'm being an ass?
Maybe it's because adults have a hard time accepting someone else's imagination?

Stop Loss

I would have to say this movie is one of the biggest disappointments I've seen since the Iraq war started. What could have been a slap in George Bush's face and a battle cry for families who have lost someone in Iraq, was turned into a pro-war, be a war hero story. I hope that doesn't spoil it for anyone, but I wouldn't even recommend going to see it if you are disgusted with US war policy and really feel soldiers need to stand up for THEMSELVES and not be walked all over by the US government.
Put it this way. I respect any solider who has gone AWOL after being stop loss. You did your duty, don't let the government force you to go back. It's your human right to say no and it's ok to be a little selfish sometimes.

Funny Games

Saw the remake (the shot by shot remake) of Funny Games this weekend and here's the one thing I think about it:
If a weirdo teenager came into your house looking for eggs and kept breaking them and then decided to hit your husband with a golf club, you would pick up your own golf club and hit them back. No psycho teen in all white wearing nothing put shorts and a t-shirt is carrying a gun. Stick up for yourself.

Hitman
Surprisingly a pretty good film if you like action movies.
Cool guns, blood, hot chick
Kind of a funky story to follow, but the acting isn't bad
You wouldn't think Timothy Olyphant could pull it off, but how hard is it really to play someone with no emotions?

And you can't go wrong when the hitman walks into a nightclub to shed some blood and Justice's DVNO is playing in the background and there's money flying everywhere.

Controversial Drink
So every once in a while I stop on the local news to see how dumb it's being and tonight I stopped on KCAL 9 and the segment was a controversial "new" alcoholic beverage mixed with an energy drink.
Uh, too bad Sparks came out like 6 years ago.

Now I really wasn't disagreeing with their points about how it makes you fucked up, but you think you're fine "cause I have energy now!" mentality. I mean come on how else are we suppose rationalize boozing? Sparks! Booze with boost! They better not steal that slogan from me. They probably will.
Anyways what bug me was how they just did an internet search for Sparks and found teenagers drinking it and acting dumb. Now I understand, you put your photos on the web people can use however yack yack, but come on who are they fooling? Grandma? exactly I guess.
So I decide I'm going to do my own photobucket search of Sparks and find five pictures in five minutes of kids getting hyphy with the orange juice of beer. One suit guy being interviewed even went so far as to say something along the lines (while pouring it in a glass) "See even the color is different and looks more like juice and kids like that."
These were my pictures. Don't worry, the one's in cars have designated drivers taking pictures or doing activities that will sober them up.

Oh this is a good one. They're rolling deep somewhere. GO SPARKS! The girl with the forty rules though.

Gives you a boost for boarding. This is such a rich in color photo that if Sparks ever wanted to advertise they would have a good starting point.

The dude with the blue one looks like he has energy.

Feeling emo? Drink Sparks. I am just giving away my advertising genius right now. They will need to hire me and give me free Sparks for my friends, since energy drinks make me feel like my eyes are sweating or something ready to burst out of my skull. Not fun. Don't want.

Sparks makes you sexy. She would like to think this is what we're getting from this one. Not so much. I think it's the dish soap or those random nylons.
Oh let's throw in another photo just for the hell of it.
Drags Queens endorse Sparks.

Wurd.

Another fun thing about work is when some one just walks into your office and offers you Saki and you proceed to take shots with your boss and them

The good ol jobby job can be fun sometimes.
Like on days when I can write e-mails like this:
Hey (insert artist name),
Would you be comfortable blowing up an ice sculpture of a helicopter in Maya?
Let me know!

Cloverfield part 2
So.so.so good.
Gets you thinking about different scenarios, or what you would do if a big ugly, spider baby dropping mutant Gozilla attacked your city and makes you wonder if there will be squeal actually explaining where the fucking thing came from.
I kind of got motion sickness though from the hand held approach, but that's ok I get queasy easy...sometimes I get queasy just thinking about being queasy...really fucking weird
Go see Cloverfield, pay no mind to my ramblings

a few reasons broken down in a list
1) You know you want to see the monster
2) It stays with you when you leave the theater
3) The editing, it's amazing when a person can cut a film right
4) Spider babies!
5) DOPE vfx, looks fantastic
6) Every actor and actress in this movie is easy on the eyes and can ACT and will help with the jittery camera work.

Chromeo
saw Chromeo at the El Rey last night.

I don't think these guys can put on a bad show. I saw them in July at the Echoplex and even though I was a lot more sober this time and they have a bigger fan base the show was still great and entertaining. My highlights being these:
a) hearing a girl behind me in all seriousness ask the person next to her, "Do you know how to do the robot?" haha, what?
b) If the fashion police would have shown up at this show they would have needed 20 patty wagons to drag people away. I know clashing is all the rage right now, but when you look like you're trying WAYYY too hard to pull it off (and we all know last year at this time you wearing all black) some one's gotta put the law down.
c) Seeing one of these above offender's get denied entry into the show because she probably bought a scalped ticket. Let me break down the outfit - tyedye looking shirt thing, purple Lycra shorts and patent leather red and silver Nike high tops. Yes. please go home. not cute.
d) Seeing the Dave 1 of this fan duo actually get on stage some how and get down with real Dave 1 before security dragged him off

I don't think there was a person on the floor that didn't take a pic with them.
Big up's to Chromeo to topping off my trying Friday.

welcome to the new world order
In the United States, more than 290 people have died since June 2001 after being struck by police Tasers
only 25 of the 290 were armed, and none had firearms according to Amnesty International
and the excuse the police and the taser companies use is a lot of these folks had pre-existing heart conditions, etc.
well why in the fuck would you tase someone when you knew nothing about their physical or mental health just for routine compliance?
why would you want to be responsible for some one's death, because they were acting irrational, but were not a threat?
I personally think cops should have to be tased in police academy as a hazing ritual, so they can see how their actions will affect others. Maybe they do, I have no idea. Maybe law enforcement is just becoming lazy and really don't care about the lives of others anymore. They'll think of every excuse in the book so they can keep doing this and not actually have to enforce law, but be the law.

Poverty of the spirit
I was reading this interview with Morgan Freeman and I really liked that he used the term, "poverty of the spirit." Racism today in the U.S. is not so much about color (which yes, is still alive and I can no way say it's not there), but is more about class. For example when you look at a disaster like Hurricane Katrina, just as many poor whites were neglected help as blacks, etc. Freeman made this really cool point about there being two kinds of poverty. One being, poverty of class - not having a lot of money and another one of having the mind state that you'll never be able to rise above that - poverty of the spirit. You convince yourself, or others convinced you that it will never be different and that's the way it is, so deal with it. And that is the main factor for a lot of Americans, their attitude towards being poor.
The liquor store on every corner of low income neighborhoods.
Drugs.
99 cent stores will all kinds of stupid shit to buy that you don't need.
Materialism.
The list could on why people have poverty of the spirit and the things rich people do to keep them there.

HARD in LA NYE 2007
A-Trak made my night on NYE
He busted out Kid Sister's, "Pro Nails" track, and while Steve Aoki was too fucked up to do his set on the other stage, A-Trak came out swinging.
Whitey, Peaches and Justice also were the shit, except for all the sound problems they were having.
All in all not worth the money, but still a good time with my girl and the homies. It was a great way to start off 2008. No idea what this year has in store, but I'm sure I'll be able to look back on it right here.

I AM LEGEND

Saw I Am Legend during my holiday break. I have never been so tense during a film ever I don't believe, except for maybe this Russian film I saw once about human trafficking that I can't remember the name of now. Will Smith is pretty damn good at playing a guy who is for the most part slowly going crazy from being by himself for three years after the supposed cure for cancer actually backfires and creates a plague that kills off a portion of the population and turns another portion into flesh eating night zombies. I wouldn't recommend this film to people who like happy endings, but I would to anyone who likes zombies, sweet visual effects, and good acting.
